What are spam trigger words?

Spam trigger words are words and phrases that spam filters — both at the inbox provider level and inside corporate email gateways — are trained to flag. When your email contains enough of them, it gets routed to the junk folder before the recipient ever sees it.

The list comes from decades of analysing what actual spam looks like. Words like “free,” “guaranteed,” “act now,” and “click here” appear in a huge proportion of spam, so filters learned to treat them as signals. The problem for cold email senders is that many of these words appear in legitimate outreach too.

Spam filters do not evaluate intent. They evaluate patterns. If your email reads like spam to an algorithm, it will be treated as spam regardless of whether your offer is legitimate.

How spam filters actually work

Modern spam filters use a combination of signals, not just keywords. But keywords are still one of the most heavily weighted factors, particularly in the subject line. Filters score each email across:

  • Word and phrase matching — specific terms that appear frequently in spam
  • Formatting patterns — ALL CAPS, excessive punctuation, and emoji in subject lines
  • Sender reputation — your domain and IP history based on previous send behaviour
  • Engagement signals — whether recipients at this domain have opened or replied to your emails before
  • HTML structure — image-to-text ratio, hidden text, and broken markup
  • Authentication — whether your domain passes SPF, DKIM, and DMARC checks

This checker uses AI to analyse your subject line and body against these signals, flagging the patterns most likely to hurt your deliverability before you send. Cleaning your copy is the fastest fix because it is entirely within your control and takes effect immediately on your next send.

The five categories this checker looks for

1. Spam trigger words

Classic words that appear across millions of spam emails: “free,” “guaranteed,” “winner,” “no risk,” “act now,” “click here.” These are the highest-priority fixes. If any of these appear in your subject line, your email is likely being filtered before it lands.

2. Urgency tactics

“Limited time,” “today only,” “last chance,” “hurry.” Artificial urgency is a pattern that spam filters recognise because it appears in almost every promotional or fraudulent email. Replacing urgency language with specific context — a real deadline, a real reason to act — fixes the filter issue and makes the email more persuasive.

3. Excessive claims

Superlatives and hype: “best price,” “unbelievable,” “incredible,” “breakthrough,” “revolutionary.” These trigger filters and also trigger reader scepticism. Specific, verifiable claims outperform both on deliverability and on reply rate.

4. Financial bait

“Earn money,” “fast cash,” “financial freedom,” “double your income.” Financial reward language is a strong signal for scam and phishing emails, so filters are trained to penalise it heavily. Reframe around business outcomes — pipeline, efficiency, cost saved — rather than personal financial reward.

5. Formatting issues

ALL CAPS words, multiple exclamation marks, dollar signs, and fake RE: or FW: in subject lines. These formatting patterns are reliable spam signals independent of the words themselves. A subject line in all caps will almost always be filtered, regardless of the content.

How to fix a high spam score

For most cold emails, the fix is straightforward: replace vague promotional language with specific, relevant context about the prospect or their company.

Beyond the copy

Clean copy gets your email out of the junk filter. Getting it into a reply requires a few other things:

  • SPF, DKIM, and DMARC configured correctly for your sending domain — without these, your domain reputation is poor regardless of your copy
  • Sending from a domain with a history — brand-new domains sending cold email at volume get flagged by most inbox providers
  • Reasonable send volume — ramping up slowly from a new sending account reduces the chance of being flagged as a spam source
  • A list with verified emails — bounces hurt sender reputation. Verify contacts before adding them to a sequence
  • Personalisation that makes the email feel like it was written for one person — engagement rates improve deliverability over time

Clean copy is the start. toflow.ai handles the rest.

toflow.ai verifies contacts before they enter a sequence, generates personalised copy per prospect using real profile data, and runs email, LinkedIn, and WhatsApp outreach from one platform. No manual copy-paste between tools.
